Johanna Chemnitz is an advanced practitioner and highly experienced teacher of Astanga Yoga for more than a decade. She teaches in line with her main teacher Nancy Gilgoff who is one of the senior students of Pattabhi Jois since 1973. Johanna’s background is rooted in modern dance with focus on styles of release based movements and improvisation. When Johanna is not touring with her dance performances she aims to share her knowledge, passion and insights both to professionel dancers and astanga yogis around the world. Johanna beautifully and respectfully mixes the creativity from dance with the flow of astanga yoga and melts everything together in a loving, generous way so we can fully embrace and experience the uniqueness we all bring to the practice.
The Workshop
Starting with a light guided meditation and the Sun Salutations, we’ll explore the sensation and use of gravity within different postures of the Astanga practice. This will be enhanced through playful but formal partner exercises inspired by dance and how dancers work with partners, as certain principles from dance can be applied and understood organically through directed touch and physical interaction in connection with each others physical structures.
In this, we’ll practice shifting our weight from our feet to our hands and back. Jumping on and off the floor, and also explore how gravity can be our helpful partner when searching for more release in our movement when entering and exiting postures.
Note to all students:
These workshops are open to all levels of Ashtanga practitioners and we invite you to explore a playful and experimental mindset towards the practice. The two workshops are complete in themselves, but clearly interwoven as they offer different journeys through the topic. So please feel free to join either one or both of the dates.
